Being a truck driver or more specifically a tramper can be pretty gruelling at times, so having a place to stop and refresh on those long days and nights can be a welcome change. The good news is that the UK is home to some great truck stops, you just have to know where to look.

Safety & Security
Most truck stops don’t offer 24/7 security so it’s important that you take the necessary steps to secure your own safety. Here are a few things you can do;
Before you set off
Be prepared for your journey, plan your route and carry these essential items;
- First aid kit
- Reflective triangles
- Identification
- Driver’s licence
- Torch
- Hand Sanitizer – don’t forget hygiene
- Mobile phone with camera in case of accidents
If you are an international haulier you should also carry;
- A Passport
- Any necessary Visas
- Your tachograph charts
- Your international driving permit
Also remember to check your HGV insurance carefully to ensure; medical, health, personal liability, legal expenses and 24-hour medical assistance are covered. For more information you can check the government website.
Parking at truck stops
Parking in an end bay could mean more exposure to tired drivers and traffic, so try and park a couple of bays in. Also check you aren’t parked behind another vehicle that will need to reverse – this will keep you safe from other people’s mistakes.
Once you have parked up don’t forget to check all windows and doors are locked.
Around the truck stop
Thieves are known to strike at truck stops so when walking around, visiting the shop or at the ATM be sure to hide your valuables and stay alert.
When the sun goes down and you’re getting ready for what you hope will be a good night’s sleep the last thing you want to hear is a knock on the door or window. This happens all too often and you should be cautious – if the person doesn’t have ID and you don’t know them, ignore them! If you have curtains then ensure they’re closed and don’t entertain opening your curtains to interact.
