As transport emissions are rising, the UK is set to miss its target to cut carbon emissions, so what can the automotive industry do? As specialist providers of campervan insurance, we’ve taken a look at the Volkswagen ID Buzz which is an electric throwback to the old Volkswagen T2 model to see how emissions can be cut and what exciting features it’s set to bring.
How can the ID Buzz help to meet carbon emission targets?
Many electric cars have fast charging capabilities, with the ID Buzz being no different offering an 80% charge in an hour. There are many retailers across the country offering electric charging with a variety of supermarkets offering charge points at their stores.
Here are some of the benefits the ID Buzz has to offer all thanks to its electric powered motor:
- Environmentally friendly – A reduction in the emissions of noise pollution, greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxide.
- It’s cheaper to run – Driving 100 miles in an electric car would typically cost £3-£4 depending on your electricity tariff, to go the same distance in a petrol car would typically cost £15. You also benefit from paying zero emissions tax, which could save you up to £2070 depending on your current vehicles emissions.
- Increased storage – The ID buzz uses a large flat battery pack underneath the veneer flooring. This has the benefit of not needing a bonnet, with the ID Buzz offering a luggage compartment in the front.
How can you benefit from the futuristic features?
If you’re a fan of the latest technology then you’re in for a treat. The ID Buzz contains many exciting innovative features. Here’s what it will include:
- Independent driving
- Touch screen Door Handle
- Oblong touch screen steering wheel
- Wing mirrors replaced with cameras
- Portrait tablet for car function control
- Augmented Reality displayed on the windscreen

How does the ID Buzz compare?
We’ve taken a look at some of the core driving essentials and compared it to one of Volkswagens latest campervans, the T6 California and it’s safe to say we were pretty impressed.

What was the inspiration behind the Volkswagen ID Buzz model?
Chief designer Einar Castillo craved a modern design that steered away from the retro look. And after growing up with Beetles and Transporters in his native Mexico, who can blame him? You just can’t beat a classic! Instead, he focused on curving the corners and flattening the rear, which not only makes it look super slick, but also makes it a tad nippier, aerodynamically speaking!
Inside, the dash is a blank canvas, with just the mere presence of a hip garden gnome that’s imitating the buddha pose. We have an inkling this might be a throwback reference to the old T2 dashboard bud vase, at least he doesn’t need watering!
This is one of three Electric Vehicles Volkswagen are releasing as part of the ID range, but did you know that this isn’t the first electric campervan from Volkswagen? They actually released the “Elektro Bus” in Germany during the 1970’s however only 70 were produced. The ID Buzz Campervan was initially displayed at the North American International Auto Show at the start of 2017, but following an overwhelmingly positive reaction, VW boss Herbert Diess revealed that it will become a production car, but don’t get your money ready just yet. You’ll have to wait until 2022 to get your hands on one.
What have the experts said?
“The I.D. Buzz is less pretentious, less aggressive and better at delivering the greatest luxury you can have in a family car – space.” – Top Gear
“Four years is a long time to wait, but if the promise shown by the ID Buzz concept during our brief drive is reflected to any degree on the production version it will be well worth it.” – Autocar
