What is caravan insurance?

Caravan insurance provides coverage for damages or losses to a caravan. There are different policies depending on whether you have a touring or static caravan.

Unlike motorhome insurance, this type of insurance is not required by law but can be a handy essential that saves you money long term, especially in the event of a claim. Caravan insurance should not be purchased as a substitute for a legally required policy, such as insurance for a car or van.

What does caravan insurance cover?

Caravan insurance coverage varies depending on your insurance. However, we will find the right caravan insurance that covers various risks, such as accidental damage in the event of theft and fire, or even liability coverage if your caravan causes damages or injuries to others.

Some insurers may also include coverage for personal belongings and additional living expenses if the caravan is damaged or destroyed while in use.

What is CRiS or VIN/Chassis number?

The Caravan Registration Identification Scheme (CRiS) is a database of all caravans manufactured since 1992 by the National Caravan Council (NCC).

When insuring your caravan, it’s extremely important that an insurer is given the CRiS, sometimes knowns as the VIN/Chassis number, along with the traditional details, such as name, age, vehicle type etc. This handy number will prove that you are your beloved caravan’s registered owner.

The CRiS number can be found along the windows of your caravan and is 17 digits long. Pre-1992 or imported caravans will have a VIN number or chassis number instead. It is possible to register your caravan with CRiS yourself.

What is a touring caravan?

A touring caravan is a type of caravan that is designed for holiday travel and can be towed behind a car. It typically has a lightweight, aerodynamic design, which makes it easier to tow and manoeuvre on the road.

Touring caravans are equipped with basic amenities such as a kitchen, sleeping areas, and storage space, and they can be used for short and long trips. Touring caravans are often used for camping and exploring different parts of a country for an extended period. Our policies offer 90 days of standard European cover, but this can be increased to unlimited for an additional premium.

What is a static caravan?

A static caravan is designed for permanent or semi-permanent use rather than for holiday travel. These types of caravans are usually larger and more spacious than touring caravans. Generally, they are more comfortable to stay in all year round than the touring varieties, so they are often used as holiday homes or alternative residences.

Static caravans will have a more home-like atmosphere than a touring caravan, with many having a fully equipped kitchen, central heating, and double-glazing. Sometimes they even have a veranda or decking for some additional outdoor space.

Are there any restrictions to where I can keep my touring caravan?

Insurance cover is available at standard terms for touring caravans kept at home, on a registered caravan site or in a dedicated caravan compound.

Can you insure my caravan if it’s permanently sited?

We can find insurance cover for your caravan if it permanently resides in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Island, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

However, if your caravan is permanently stored outside the UK, we cannot cover it. Policies covering Europe will cover your caravan only for a maximum of 90 days when you’re travelling.

What is the difference between market value and new for old cover?

‘New for old’ cover is fairly common in the world of caravan insurance. It means that in the event of a claim. If your caravan is insured at ‘market value’, your caravan will be treated as brand new in terms of value at this moment in time, and it will not be treated as a new vehicle.

There are restrictions on ‘new for old’ cover, which may differ depending on your policy and insurer. The main limits are usually that your caravan must be within ten years old and valued at the price it was when brand new, not at market value.
