Come rain or shine, winter or summer, you can jump into your motorhome and set off to discover new places. But during the winter months there are some extra precautions you’ll need to take to make your adventures run smoothly. That’s why we’re sharing our six essential winter motorhome hacks with you.
1. One-pot winter cooking
Who doesn’t love a good hot meal, especially when the weather takes a turn for the worst? Don’t let yourself get cold or run down during your winter trips – fill up on hearty, one-pot winter warmers like stew, or scouse depending on where you’re from! Stock up on dried and tinned ingredients too. With a long shelf life they’ll last throughout the winter months, don’t require much preparation and are perfect for bulking out dishes to ensure you have plenty of leftovers.
2. Motorhome skirting

Most motorhomes aren’t built for freezing weather conditions, so when temperatures dip below freezing skirting will help protect your vehicle. Finding the best skirting can require a bit of research, so don’t leave it until the last minute. Alternatively, if the snow begins to fall make use of it. Take a shovel and pack the snow around your motorhome – this can work just as well!
3. Remove your water hose

When temperatures drop, don’t let your water hose freeze. To avoid a frozen hose be sure to remove it before the cold weather arrives. As an alternative, you might want to consider purchasing a special plug-in hose, or if you’re crafty you can make your own with pipe heating cable. A simpler option may be to save the hassle and just fill your fresh water tank.
4. Detectors
If you don’t own a Carbon Monoxide and smoke detector then invest! You should have one in your house, and you need one in your motorhome too. The small vicinity of your motorhome is full of hazards – even more so when you start heating it – so make sure you’re safe. If you already have detectors fitted, remember to test them on a regular basis.
5. Use campsites
Even full-time motorhomers use campsites during the winter months as it helps them save money, using electricity to heat their motorhome rather than gas. This can also be much safer. 6. Finally, be prepared!
To be prepared for the cold weather during your winter getaway, you must pack well. Bring plenty of spare layers and warm blankets for the evenings as well as scarves, hats and gloves. Investing in a decent down jacket will keep you nice and cosy too – it’s just like wearing a duvet!
