Your dog is part of the family too so why should they miss out on the fun? A motorhome or camping trip could be the perfect holiday for them. There will be plenty of walking, running, sleeping and enjoying nature. Plus you don’t have to feel guilty for leaving them at home.
It’s not just the dog that will love it either; the kids will have lots of fun as you relax. Just remember to take plenty of toys so they don’t get bored too easily!
Even though it can be a great experience if you haven’t taken your dog away with you before it can be a little daunting, so here are some tips to keep you at ease.
The Journey
Travelling with your dog can be much like travelling with a child except they can’t ask “are we there yet?” It may be best to avoid long drives or if that’s not possible then taking regular stops will help break up the journey.
On Arrival
Remember that not all campsites and caravan parks are pet friendly so ensure you choose a site that is. You don’t want to turn up in your motorhome ready to holiday just to be told “no dogs allowed”. The campsite finder is a useful tool helping you locate some of the UK’s best campsites.
The Rules
Each campsite has its own rules for dog owners so check these out before you leave. Many campsites may ask you to keep dogs on a leash – if this is the case take a 20ft leash and stake just in case. Also remember your scoop and poop bags, and have a read of the countryside code before you set off, this way you’ll be truly prepared.

When at the campsite be respectful of other guests, it may be surprising but not everyone will love your dog. With a dog that is fully trained this is simple but if your dog isn’t used to being around several people or is not yet house trained be sure to keep a close eye on them.
Dogs are great companions especially when travelling alone and they can be an excellent way to meet new people. All dog owners will know that pets are fantastic talking points, even at the local park.
Evenings can be fun too just choose your campsite wisely. Check the campsite allows barbeques and if not head to the nearest beach or park. If a barbeque or picnic is not for you then try the local pub – not all pubs accept dogs so check before setting off.
Going abroad?
Planning a caravan holiday abroad with your dog can be a little trickier than a UK getaway; there is a lot to consider. Firstly rules can differ per country so it’s important you know where you’re heading and what you’ll need. Here’s a brief list of some of the main criteria:
- Get a pet passport
- Ensure all pets are micro chipped
- Travel via an approved route using an approved carrier
- Ensure pets are vaccinated against rabies and all boosters are up to date
