Chauffeur insurance FAQs:
There are many elements to consider when shopping around for chauffeur insurance, from cover for the executive vehicles you drive to protection for high-profile passengers you work with. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about what defines a chauffeur and the type of cover you will need:
What is a chauffeur?
It’s easy to confuse being a taxi driver with being a chauffeur, but the two professions are very different. While a taxi driver can operate under either public or private hire, a chauffeur will exclusively work as a private hire vehicle and will often be hired for special events or unique circumstances.
Being driven by a chauffeur is a luxury experience, and drivers will look the part in a dark suit. Often chauffeur drivers are trained in etiquette and security. They will look after all of their passengers’ needs and requirements, from bookings to offering advice on places to go.
Drivers must have specialist knowledge of an environment or event if they need to change their planned route for practical and safeguarding purposes. This service is tailored to their clientele, and a chauffeur may work with the same passengers over a more extended period.
What insurance do I need to be a chauffeur?
Chauffeur insurance will cover you for ‘the carriage of passengers for hire and reward’. Essentially, passenger liability will usually be covered by chauffeur insurance. However, this will only cover paying customers while they are inside the car. Often chauffeurs require public liability cover in addition to chauffeur insurance.
What’s the difference between a chauffeur and private hire insurance?
Insurers take into account the following main differences between chauffeurs and private hire drivers:
Chauffeurs are all about discretion and bespoke service – everything is planned down to the finest detail. This means a chauffeured vehicle will not have a two-way radio like a taxi.
Chauffeurs will not take payments in their vehicles as they operate via invoices. No cash is ever exchanged in the car.
Only luxury cars that are classed as executive vehicles – such as a Rolls Royce, Bentley, and BMW – and classic or modified vehicles will be covered by chauffeur insurance. These cars are larger, more comfortable, and expensive to maintain or fix.
Chauffeurs are usually very experienced drivers, so their costs will differ from a standard private hire driver.
This product is designed for chauffeurs, but we also offer private hire and taxi insurance. If you aren’t sure which policy is right, feel free to call our team on 0800 0815 024 for guidance on the correct insurance.
Why do chauffeurs need a different type of insurance?
A chauffeur will go above and beyond, then even further, to ensure the best possible service for their clientele. The luxury nature of this job requires drivers to transport, often high-profile, clients in high-value cars.
These sought-after vehicles are often vulnerable to thieves and costly to fix in the event of a breakdown or need for repair.
What extra cover should a chauffeur consider?
The demanding nature of this job often means that the risk–factor will vary greatly. Whether a chauffeur is working on a high-profile event or for an important client over a more extended period of time, it’s vital to consider all aspects of the job.
Alongside chauffeur insurance, drivers often opt for additional cover such as:
Breakdown Cover: We offer a range of roadside assistance covers to get you back on the road at the scene of your breakdown.
Excess Protection: This cover helps get back the cost of your motor insurance excess if you make a claim.
Liability Insurance: We work with leading insurers to get the perfect policy to protect your business.
Can I add another chauffeur to my policy?
Additional chauffeurs can be added to your policy, subject to specific criteria.
Can I drive other vehicles if I take out comprehensive chauffeur insurance?
The chauffeur policy does not include a ‘driving other cars’ extension.
Do you offer short-term chauffeur insurance policies?
While some providers may accommodate a short-term policy, our insurance policies are based on 12-month contracts.
How do I make a claim?
